I have confidence in lots of things: myself, the fact that the sun will rise each day, that I will keep breathing, that my husband loves me and lots of other things ranging from the trivial to the important. David actually doesn’t seem to have confidence in any of those things. In fact, he has his confidence only in one thing: the Lord.
Vs. 2 – “You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing.”
There is nothing else good that David can depend on. That doesn’t mean that he can’t enjoy life. The very next verse, he talks about the joy of his friends.
Vs. 3 – “As for the saints who are in the land, they are the glorious ones in whom is all my delight.”
Nevertheless, his confidence remains in God who has made his lot secure and who has given him an inheritance. In fact, it is probably this very fact that he can enjoy his friends and his life. His sustenance comes from God and thus, his heart is ready to enjoy the things around him. Often, for me, I think I often have my confidence in things that are not secure and cannot give me true life.
Vs. 8 – “I have set the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.”
How powerful! Lord Jesus, I ask you to allow me to place you constantly before me today. I ask that nothing would take Your place as my focus. Let me continue to rest secure in Your foundation. For in You (and You alone), I cannot be shaken.
